The horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance right now. Rather than stale franchises and torture porn, there are extra and native horror movies hitting theaters all few months. highly thought of director Steven Soderbergh is even getting in on the action, in the same way as his extra psychological thriller Unsane. The film has been getting a ton of press for it being entirely shot on an iPhone, but horror fans will afterward be sympathetic in the same way as its cast. Playing opposite The Crown's Claire Foy is actor Joshua Leonard, who is perhaps best known for his iconic role in 1999's The Blair Witch Project. I recently asked him what he thought of the own up of the genre, especially in the wake of get Out's recent Oscar win. The Unsane star told me,
I was fittingly happy that get Out got recognized, because it was as technically good and socially relevant and with ease written and executed as any of the extra movies last year. I think it's unusual example of a film that plays as a traditional thriller, but afterward Trojan Horses its mannerism into extra issues that are socially relevant. And that's one of the good things from the genre. And I love that we're disturbing farther away from the slasher film and the slay count, to the opportunity to say something, but reach it in a fun and scary way.
Joshua Leonard has seen the horror genre go in many places in the approximately 20 years back he made his debut in The Blair Witch Project, especially in the in the same way as few years. in the same way as get Out having damage the way in for horror movies to possibly become tribute fodder, it seems in the same way as the difficult is broad way in for difficult thrillers to possibly get nominations.
Get Out is one of the most widely affluent films of last year, and Jordan Peele's directorial debut quickly became a all-powerful pop culture moment. The film tackled hard issues of race, even if afterward providing large quantity of scares and fun for audiences. It's this tradition that Joshua Leonard seems to hope continues. Just because a movie is scary doesn't necessarily take aim that it can't afterward have a message. extra than control away from danger.
Meanwhile, Unsane is tackling its own set of issues. The psychological thriller centers not far off from a girl named Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) who is pain from trauma joined to her stalker (Joshua Leonard). In addition to bringing attention to issues revolving not far off from mental health issues, it afterward seems to be making a avowal just about the mental health and system in the country. Sawyer is truly tricked into being admitted, which may or may not have to reach in the same way as her medical insurance's achievement to pay for a week's stay.
You can consider the publication of Unsane for yourself now, as it's currently in theaters. In the meantime, check out our 2018 liberty list to plot your next vacation to the movies.
