After it recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary leaving Neverland shortly became a source of controversy. The film follows two adults who allegation that Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children. The pop stars family and estate responded to the film by putting out a avowal that denied the claims of the film and its principals ,as well as stated that leaving Neverland is not a documentary, but a tabloid mood assassination. Now the films director, Dan Reed, has responded to their statement, assuring that his film is a documentary. He said:
It is a four-hour documentary by an experienced documentarian gone a long track autograph album in laboratory analysis and telling obscure stories and this is a obscure story. hence I'd tell it's higher than doubt a documentary. Anyone gone any knowledge of that form would endure a documentary. A four-hour piece, is that a tabloid?
In his response to Michael Jacksons estate, Dan Reed seems to endure the most thing gone the allegation that his film is not a documentary. He defends leaving Neverlands documentary status and rebukes any notion that it is tabloid fodder gone this matter-of-fact response.
Speaking gone The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Reed laid out the various ways in which his film qualifies as a documentary, including his records as a documentary filmmaker, which is not a thing of opinion. Dan Reed has lots of documentary credits to his name, including for films that tackled obscure subjects just gone the one leaving Neverland covers. hence in defending the film, Dan Reed is as well as listing off the credentials that made him ascribed to make it.
In adjunct to axiom that his film is a documentary, Dan Reed as well as questioned whether or not Michael Jacksons family, the ones criticizing his film, have even seen it. He said:
Their statements are not consistent gone having watched the movie.
The pretentiousness Dan Reed sees it, the Jackson family didnt give his film its due consideration, condemning it without even seeing it because of the subjects in the film and the version brute told. Of course, if the film even insinuates the Michael Jackson sexually abused the two subjects as children, I dont imagine that seeing the film would correct the Jackson familys instruction of it.
Elsewhere in his excursion gone THR, he asserts that he made no try to describe Michael Jackson at every in the film, and that leaving Neverland is a version roughly two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, their families and the impact that sexual abuse had on them, and that their link gone Michael Jackson is just an element of the story.
Given the delicate flora and fauna of the version and the entrenched beliefs in Michael Jacksons guilt or innocence, I wouldnt expect this to be the last volley help and forth we hear roughly leaving Neverland.
HBO is planning to premiere leaving Neverland in March on the channel/platform. Because leaving Neverland is a four-hour film, HBO is time-honored to split it into two surgically remove chunks to expose higher than two nights.
