Summer is the time for spectacle feat movies and nothing looks to be a pain to fit that tally more than Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper. It's an outdated feat movie that sees obvious influences from franchises with Die Hard, and extra "one man beside the world" style feat movies. Based on the reviews, that have hit this daylight ahead of the film's Friday release, Skyscraper is helpfully NOT Die Hard. However, that doesn't ambition that it isn't utterly without appeal and significant entertainment value. Out own Conner Schwerdtfeger gave the film three stars and while he says it has its issues, it will satisfy the summer feat fan...
Skyscraper isn't as fine or thrill-seeking as the films that it pays homage to, but it's a refreshing alter of pace to look a competently-made native summer feat movie.
The Wrap is distinct to hint that Skyscraper isn't a wholly native concept, but doesn't think that will be much of a burden for the audience looking for a fine time.
You'll take the DNA of extra movies here, but that familiarity won't interfere with the vertiginous thrills, the breathtaking turns in the air (and CG), and the near-constant declare of adrenaline-fueled action.
Few reviews are utterly sparkling nearly Skyscraper, but many of them take that, while the movie may not be perfect, there is some agreeable feat to watch and some fun to be had. As is frequently the case, Dwayne Johnson himself gets a lot of the tally for carrying the audience through any feeble bad skin in the film. As Variety humorously puts it...
This is escapism, unmodified and simple, and while the structure is rickety, by enlisting Johnson, Thurber ensures that his Skyscraper is built on hermetic Rock.
However, while most seem to think that Skyscraper is at least tolerable fun to acquire you through, others are less generous. Entertainment Weekly recognizes the two films that were helpfully the primary inspiration for Skyscraper, but it doesn't think the extra film does anything that those movies did that made them great.
A film that suggests what would happen if you took The Towering Inferno and Die difficult and stripped them of the qualities that made both work.
The roughest review comes from The extra York Post, who gives the movie abandoned a single star out of four, and thinks the screenplay is fittingly derivative of those bigger films that it may have been written by an actual computer.
The collective film feels as if it's on autopilot, or most likely written by unnatural sharpness that's been fed a steady diet of the Die difficult oeuvre, Speed, Das Boot, and, I'm guessing, The Towering Inferno. But with most AI facsimiles, this one can't arrive stirring with anything memorably human.
If you were hoping that Skyscraper was the next great feat movie, it appears that isn't the case. It would seem that your enjoyment of the film may be dependant on your deed to enjoy the feat without bodily irritated by a less than "rock" hermetic script. Skyscraper opens Friday.
