Before the release of Fast and Furious 9, the series is going to spin off in a brand-new direction by taking what worked in The Fate of the Furious and focusing on Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in their very own buddy movie. Many fans still have quite a few questions about the direction and scale of the film, and when I posed some of these questions to producer and President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia, he explained that the film would be made for a modest budget, while also delivering what fans have come to expect from this world. Garcia said:
We're going to make it responsibly. It's definitely spinoff so the way we're looking at it is it's the first in a new series of movies. So obviously the scale of those Fast and Furious movies are enormous. The spectacle is amazing and the stuff they do is, Chris Morgan has an unbelievable brain for that stuff. We don't like to say 'scale down' because the movie's still gonna be huge and it's still gonna be fun, but we're going to be responsible. It's important for us, and for the studio as well, the bigger the price of the movie the higher you've got to hit and we don't take for granted how hard it is to be successful in this business. So we like to start off at a great price that isn't gonna compromise the quality of the movie or the scale. We're gonna deliver what Fast and Furious fans are used to, we just know we're going to deliver it at a great price that allows us to everything we need to do while the studio is also smiling.
So, if nothing else, we can generally look forward to something that honors the legacy of the Fast and Furious series. The Hobbs & Shaw spinoff movie will deliver some solid action and spectacle, but it will do so in a way that's cost-effective for the studio and doesn't eat into the film's profit margins. Enter director David Leitch, who has proven with films like Deadpool 2, John Wick, and Atomic Blonde that he knows how to craft some fantastic action with (relatively speaking) lower budgets than movies like Furious 7 or Avengers: Infinity War.
One other thing that seems particularly notable about Hiram Garcia's remarks is the fact that there seems to be full franchise potential in this idea. As he laid out in his comments during our interview, the Hobbs & Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff is being framed as the entry point for a brand-new franchise, thus seemingly indicating that the folks behind this movie have considered the possibility of sequels and future spinoffs. Of course, we will have to wait until the first film premieres to see what happens from there.
