Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently delivered a widely-praised sequel in the form of Deadpool 2, but many fans of their writing have already begun to look ahead to another notable sequel they are working on. That's right; we're talking about Zombieland 2. Earlier this week, rumors started to swirl that the long-awaited Zombieland follow-up had filmed in secret and was already in the can, but Reese took to social media to double tap those rumors and debunk them. In response to the rumors, Reese wrote:
Sorry, Zombieland fans. If you were hoping that there was already another movie all filmed and ready to go, then Rhett Reese has some bad news for you. Zombieland 2 is not in the can, so any reports of test screenings or completed filming are also not true.
This rumor kicked into high gear earlier this week following an article suggesting that Zombieland 2 was already in the process of test screening. Beyond that, the report also indicated that the rumored title for Zombieland 2 was Zombieland 2: Double Tap, which wouldn't be the worst title ever. Alas, Rhett Reese's tweet has thrown cold water on that possibility, and we're now left waiting for further news about the project's development.
Despite Rhett Reese's denial of the existence of a filmed version of Zombieland 2, it is worth remembering that the film is still on the way. Reese, Paul Wernick, and director Ruben Fleischer (who is currently working on Sony's Venom) remain committed to the project, and Reese has confirmed that they plan to move forward with the original cast, which includes Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin.
What we do know about Zombieland 2 promises something incredibly different than anything seen in the original movie. Current rumors about the plot of the film have also suggested that it will catch up with the ensemble from the first movie in a landscape where traditional zombies have become extinct. However, their reprieve from the walking dead is cut short when they discover a new breed of "super zombies" that are stronger than the first and can only be killed by a headshot. Couple this with the fact that Little Rock (Breslin) will run away with a mysterious figure, and Tallahassee (Harrelson) will find love, and it sounds like things could get pretty interesting after this decade-long wait for Zombieland 2.
