The Kingsman franchise is growing by leaps and bounds. In addition to the expected third Kingsman movie starring Taron Egerton, the brand is planning at least a pair of spinoffs, which could spawn sequels in their own right. With all the potential films coming Kingsman could end up a major movie property when it's all said and done. However, Taron Egerton thinks that after he makes his the third installment he'll bow out of the franchise for a while, though he says he wants to come back at some point down the road to pass the mantle on to a new hero. I think what I would like to happen is for us to do a third one and for it to feel like a worthy third installment to what has been a great part of my life. And then my dream for it would be that I would kind hang up my suit for 10, 15 years and then come back and pass the mantle on. That's what I'd like to do, I think that would be fun. We have to take a step away for it for a while before we did that.
It sounds like Taron Egerton plans to hang up his tailored suit of the Kingsman franchise after his third outing, but he thinks it would be great to come back after a decade or so to play an older Eggy so that he can play the sort of role that Colin Firth did in the original movie where Eggy became a member of the Kingsman in the first place.
On its face, it's certainly not a crazy idea. Even if the Kingsman franchise went to sleep after the forthcoming Kingsman 3, 10 or 15 years is just about the right amount of time to wait for the eventual reboot of the franchise. Hell, these days 10 years seems like longer than most studios would bother to wait to reboot a known brand with previous box office success.
However, in the case of Kingsman, it might not even require a reboot. In addition to the planned Kingsman 3 we're also expecting a new Kingsman movie that will be a prequel set decades before the current films, as well as a spinoff that would follow the U.S. version of the group, the Statesman, that were introduced in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. If either, or both of those films do as well as the current Kingsman movies, then we could very likely see sequels to each of them that could go on for years.
That could keep the franchise going without the need of a modern Kingsman movie for a long time. Taron Egerton could go on and make other films, though probably not Robin Hood sequels, for years and fans probably wouldn't even notice that a decade and gone by until Egerton returned alongside whoever the hot young actor of the day is in about 2030 or so, as he tells the Empire Films Podcast he'd like to do.. Then the franchise gets extended again with another trilogy or so starring that young guy. Or woman, it should probably be a woman.
This doesn't sound like a terrible idea. Although, we'll have to wait for more than 10 years to see if it works out.
It's a smart move in one way, a bad move in another. For one thing, do you really want Disney's hands getting all over Jordan Peele's idea of a Gargoyles movie? Because by the end of the day, it's not going to be Peele's movie, it will be Disney's, and I doubt they'd be willing to give him full reign.
