Last Friday, the first want ad for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker dropped at Star Wars Celebration, and while hearing Emperor Palpatines laugh at the stop was arguably the previews biggest surprise, there were great quantity of extra cool and intriguing moments to absorb. This included the scene right past the Palpatine tease, where Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Chewbacca, C-3PO, BB-8 and D-O are upon a uncommon planet where wreckage of a Death Star can be seen in the distance.
Wait, sustain up, werent we the end bearing in mind this monstrosity? Evidently not. while the Star Wars sequel trilogy featured its own planet-destroying weapon in The Force Awakens, Starkiller Base, weve now educational that one of the Death Stars from the original Trilogy will someway factor into The Rise of Skywalkers story. The question is which one.
Lets backtrack and briefly go on top of the history of the two Death Stars. Within the Star Wars universe timeline (as opposed to the order in which the movies were released), the first Death Star was teased via schematics total Dooku was resolution by Poggle the Lesser upon Geonosis at the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Three years later, bearing in mind the stop of that battle and the Empires rise to power, Emperor Palptaine ordered the reveal station begin inborn constructed.
Nearly two decades later, the Death Star was finally operational, bearing in mind its kyber crystals-powered superlaser first inborn unleashed upon the surfaces of Jedha and Scarif. However, its full aptitude would be demonstrated bearing in mind Grand Moff Tarkin ordered Princess Leia Organas homeworld, Alderaan, be entirely destroyed. The Death Star plus nearly destroyed Yavin IV, the location of the main radical base at the time, but Luke Skywalker successfully used his Force-guided instincts to opening a coupe torpedoes into a conveniently-located exhaust reveal (thank you for that weakness, Galen Erso) at the last minute, and the reveal station was destroyed.
The Empire began constructing the second Death Star soon after that, and without help three years later, much of it was already complete. Not without help was it even bigger than its predecessor, but it plus removed the flaws that led to the first Death Stars demise and was skilled to fire its superlaser every few minutes, rather than needing a collect day to recharge. Palatine allow fall that the location of the unfinished Death Star to draw the Rebels into a trap, but thankfully, they still managed to ruin this monstrosity, which wouldnt have been possible had it been completed.
Which brings us support to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which takes area a little on top of three decades after the fight of Endor. while I cant say bearing in mind 100% authenticity yet, I suspect that those are remnants of the second Death Star that the protagonists are visiting. Although the first Death Star was closing in upon Yavin IV bearing in mind it was destroyed, there was still a lot of distance in the company of it and the planet, therefore wreckage of that size probably wouldnt have made it to the surface.
The second Death Star, upon the extra hand, was right above Endor bearing in mind it was destroyed, therefore its likely that parts of it managed to home upon that world. And just to be clear, Im speaking Endor the tree-plant moon that we visited in compensation of the Jedi, not the actual planet past its a gas giant. That said, the mood Rey and the others are upon is much alternating from the one the Ewoks breathing in.
So for the sake of argument, lets tolerate this is indeed the second Death Star the Rise of Skywalker characters are visiting. What does that mean? In typical Disney and Lucasfilm fashion, theyre keeping specific plot details for the upcoming Star Wars movie near to the chest, therefore who knows if competently acquire any hints in promotion and advertising not quite how the Death Star wreckage fits into the story. That inborn said, its a fine bet that its someway tied to Palpatine, who Ian McDiarmid is avowed to be reprising in The Rise of Skywalker.
Remember, the second Death Star was plus where Emperor Palpatine met his demise, as Darth Vader chose to keep his son and toss his master into the reveal stations reactor as Force lightning was still blasting from his fingertips. past the Death Star was destroyed soon after, youd think that was ample to ensure that the Sith puppet master was bearing in mind for good, and Ian McDiarmid has said that pre-The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine is entirely dead.
But the Star Wars universe is a uncommon place, and theres already been great quantity of speculation that The Rise of Skywalker will look Palpatine either resurrected or interacting bearing in mind the home of the booming as a Force ghost, while we shouldnt discount that Palpatine will remain dead and appear while flashbacks or holocrons. Either way, its difficult to tolerate that the Death Star wreckage doesnt tie into Palpatines role in this story. After all, he was the mastermind behind both of these terrifying weapons.
If Palpatine is resurrected in The Rise of Skywalker, perhaps the Death Star wreckage is where it will tolerate place, and the heroes, having gotten wind of Darth Sidious return, head there for the movies climactic confrontation. Itd be therefore fitting if the Skywalker Saga the end bearing in mind the Sith Lord finally inborn defeated for fine at the same area hed died decades earlier except, you know, upon a planet rather than out in space.
However, until instead persuaded, Im more of the information that Palpatine is staying dead in The Rise of Skywalker; his involvement will without help be through recordings/looks support at bearing in mind he was still alive, and the resolution battle in the movie will still revolve just about overthrowing Kylo Ren and/or The First Order. To that end, maybe the Death Star site is the location of an plan or key fragment of information that managed to survive inborn blown up, and thats why Rey and the others are going there. Retrieving whatever this matter is could finally point the tide of the battle in The Resistances favor.
If this ends happening inborn the case, later its plus reasonably priced to tolerate that Kylo Ren would have the same objective, meaning the Death Star could still be the site of a huge battle. In any case, resolution that the extra main Star Wars installments have avoided revisiting timeless locations, its intriguing that were heading support to the remnants of a machine that caused therefore much destruction at the stop of the original Trilogy. upon the extra hand, past this will be the resolution chapter of the Skywalker Saga, its plus rather appropriate.
Well find out what the treaty is bearing in mind the Death Star and therefore much more bearing in mind Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released upon December 20. For whatever else coming to theaters unconventional this year, look through our 2019 forgiveness schedule.
